How to Block Inappropriate Content: A Complete Parent's Guide

Content filtering is a first line of protection — not a complete solution. Here's an honest, practical guide to the tools that exist and how to use them effectively.

Understanding Content Filtering

Content filtering works by intercepting requests to websites and apps and blocking those that match categories you've designated as inappropriate. There are several levels at which filtering can be applied: at the device (through built-in parental controls or third-party apps), at the router (affecting all devices on your home network), and at the DNS level (affecting all traffic regardless of what network or device is being used).

Each level has advantages and limits. Device-level filtering is easily bypassed by accessing different networks (a friend's hotspot, a school network, cellular data). Router-level filtering applies within your home but not outside it. DNS-level filtering — the most comprehensive approach — applies wherever the device connects, including cellular networks.

Built-In Platform Parental Controls

Every major platform provides built-in parental controls that are free and adequate for basic needs.

Apple Screen Time (iOS and macOS): Settings → Screen Time. Allows content restrictions by rating, app-specific time limits, communication limits, privacy restrictions, and schedule-based downtime. Family Sharing allows parent accounts to manage children's accounts remotely.

Google Family Link (Android): Installed on the parent and child device, allows app approval, website filtering, usage reports, and device location. Works across Android devices regardless of manufacturer.

Microsoft Family Safety (Windows & Xbox): Parental controls for Windows PCs, Xbox consoles, and Microsoft Edge browser. Allows spending limits, screen time scheduling, and content filtering.

Router-Level Filtering

Several DNS filtering services can be configured at the router level to apply filtering to every device on your home network. These services typically block categories of sites (adult content, gambling, malware) and can be customized. Popular options include Cloudflare for Families (free), CleanBrowsing (free and paid tiers), and Cisco OpenDNS (free and paid). The limitation is that router filtering doesn't follow devices when they leave home.

Comprehensive Cross-Device Filtering

For families that want filtering to apply across devices wherever they go — home, school, or cellular — a dedicated family safety app is the most effective approach. These tools install a profile on the device that routes DNS traffic through a filtering server, regardless of the network. They typically also offer usage reports, app controls, and the ability to set different filtering levels for different children in a household.

What Filtering Cannot Do

Content filtering is not a solution by itself. It cannot filter content delivered in direct messages or end-to-end encrypted communications. It cannot block all inappropriate content on platforms that mix it with acceptable content (social media feeds, YouTube). It cannot stop a motivated teenager from finding ways around filters — and the attempt to do so can harm your relationship more than the content you're trying to block.

The most important thing filtering does is reduce casual, accidental access for younger children and remove low-effort pathways to content. For a curious and motivated teenager, conversation and relationship are substantially more protective than any technical control.

Choosing Your Approach

For children under 12, a combination of device-level parental controls and a router-level filter provides good coverage with minimal complexity. For older children and teenagers, a mobile-focused filtering app that travels with the device provides better coverage. In all cases, filtering works best as one layer of a broader approach that also includes household agreements, ongoing conversation, and a parent-child relationship built on trust rather than surveillance.
